The effects model
The effects model is the consumption of media texts which has an effect or influence upon the audience. This is normally considered as a bad effect. This is because the audiences are passive and powerless, so they cannot stop watching it.

Lyrics
Lights out in the sky tonight, you were just a figure in the dark you never put you're finger on it.
A faint hope lit by candlelight, never had a chance to draw a breath or ever really feel wanted.
I drank every drop we had; you were just the bitter executioner of all we had.
I fought hard to get it back, you were all the minutes and the hours we never had.
By June we were renegades running from the reaper's grasp, he's the only one who wants us.
We came back to celebrate; celebrate the weaknesses and frailties that put our fate upon us.
We drank every drop we had; you were just the bitter executioner of all we had.
I fought hard to get it back, you were all the minutes and the hours we never had.
I know we said follow the sun, We'll head west but we'll never grow up.
We said it was getting late, no-one ever came for you, you hid the other side of reason.
We said you should celebrate the falling of the leaves from all of their multi coloured trees and, We drank every drop we had; you were just the bitter executioner of all we had.
I fought hard to get it back, you were all the minutes and the hours we never had.
I know we said follow the sun, We'll head west but we'll never grow up.
Come on babe lets give it some dedication, All you can hope for's wind back into your sails.

Dear Martyn,
On behalf of theCOLOURS, who we represent, I am writing to give our consent to the use of Minutes and Hours by the COLOURS as the basis of your Media Studies course and, in particular, the production of a music video.
We have suddenly had a series of such requests, so while we are encouraged that there is so much interest in the band’s material at present, we must insist that a copy of your final work is sent to us as soon as it is available and that no commercial use is made of your work without reference back to ourselves of course. Perhaps we shall have to hold a competition of our own!
Having said that we wish you all the best with your project and look forward to seeing how you have interpreted the song. I have attached the song, which I hope is the version you’re familiar with. At present the COLOURS are recording in Leeds and there are a few interim versions in circulation.
Best wishes,
Andrew Parsons

Song choice
Our group have got 2 songs which we feel were suitable to make a good music video. The 2 songs that we got were both from unsigned.com. One was Jackie Boyz- shes not perfect and the other one was The colours- minutes and hours. For both of these songs we got an email confiming that we are allowed to use them.
Our group have decided to use The colours- minutes and hours. We have chose this song as we feel it will be the best one to make a music video for. We also thought this one would suit us as the group had more ideas for this song then what we did for the other song. I will be posting the lyrics and the confimation email later as i will need to get them both from my group member.

100 music videos
In class we have been watching 100 music videos and most of the music videos are different so as we were watching them we can see some of the ideas so it will help us think of ideas to create our music video.
The music video was Sinead- nothing compares 2 u and this video is valuable as in the video had a close up of her most of the way through the video and in the video was real tears and emotion so it made it more effective because it made her think of her past.
One of fat boy slims video had an actor dancing in the video while the song was playing, and also he jumped and then started flying so because this video is different so it was the video that stood out more then the song as you would be watching what the actor was going to do next in the video instead of concentrating on the video.
Another music video was radio head and this video can give the group idea as to what to have in the video as you see the face with like glass in front of it and the lyrics were scrolling up as he was singing them and also at the end he had to hold his breath for 50 seconds, but he kept failing so when he eventually done it you could see that he was pleased with himself because he had done it. It could also cause discomfort as you watched him hold his breath. So these are just a few ideas that we could use to make a good music video.

Music video research
We watched two music videos and these gave us an idea of what we could do depending on the song. We know that we will have to look at mise-en-scene to see what we could do to make it look and feel real. For example for a rock song we would change costume and make up to like a rock feel so we would have black clothes. Also the location would be in a dark place to give it a rock feel.

Song
We have been given permission to use a song but we are going to see if the lyrics will be good so that we can come up with good ideas. We got the music from unsigned.com
Group meeting
We are now back at school and we will be working to decide which song we feel will be best to do a music video for. When we find the song we will then listen to the song to get the lyrics and then we will analyse it and try to get ideas from that.

Music video research
We watched videos and they all showed something different. Some of the music videos wanted to tell a story for example 50 cent "in da club". This video was telling you about a new artist and how Eminem found him and he is making him train. Another music video did not want to tell a story and it did not make any sense for example true faith. So for our video this will help to decide what to do depending on what the lyrics and the music is like, so then we can decide what we think is best for the song.

Mise-en-scene and Cinematography
Mise-en-scene
Cinematography
One shot that stood out was when he first walked into the place and it was a long shot. This shot showed what the place was like and then it let the audience see the people that are there as well so they know who they are and also you can see that it is dark and looks deserted where it has hardly any thing in the place because they are dancing. Another shot that i see was a long shot but it was showing him dance and this shot came up a few times as it is important this is because it is showing the audience his dance moves and also body language so you can see whether he wants to be there and is enjoying it.
First impressions
My first impression of the video is that it is very entertaining and it seems as though it may tell a story. Then at the beginning it is slow and tense and you can feel that something big will happen that is going to be really good.
Analysis of a music video
What genre of music do they produce?
He produces pop music
what sort of image do they have?
He has millions of fans worldwide and he is also is respected in the music industry and he is known as the "King of Pop".
Who is the target audience?
The target audience is around 16+ as his dancing is well known and it appeals to both genders. To get the audience watching him he starts with something that would surprise people because he gets a coin and flips it in to a juke box. This is to get the music starting so it was a very good beginning to get people watching because they thought that it was good how it was done. Also this gets the video started and then it gets better with seeing the dance moves and the singing. The video is shot in a dark place that is kind of smoky and this could show that he is mysterious and unpredictable.
How successful are they / have they been?
He is very successful and he started his solo career in 1971. His album Thriller remains the worlds best selling album of all time. Also his other solo albums are also among the worlds best selling records.

Music video research
We watched 100 greatest videos and this was very good as it gave us ideas for our group so then we have a rough idea in how to create videos. In 21 seconds the so solid crew was introducing themselves and they had to introduce themselves in 21 seconds and everyone of them introduced themselves differently some came in with fire and on was tornado and this is just an idea that we could use or we could take an idea out there.
Also another video we see was Herbie Hancock and he was not allowed to feature in his video because he was black and MTV did not want black people so he had a bizarre video because he had robots dancing and moving. So we could make our music video more unique by using new things and adding them together to create something new.
Another video that we watched was the corner shop now this is an idea that we could use. They had corner shop pop up everywhere but we could use it and make our music name pop up a couple of times just so people that watch it will know what our name was so this would be a good idea to make sure we stan out and people remember us.
